Lesson 14

Dear Fatty,

Thank you for your fourteenth message. My comments and corrections follow.

Sincerely,

Dear Professor Susan Garreis,

Thank you for your comments and corrections.

Previously, I used to think if I don't go to English speaking countries, I don't need high level English skills.

But now I think English is very important.

At least if my English is poor, I would not be able to go to many places of interest.

It will make me miss a lot of fun.

>According to this Wikipedia page, English is the third most common language for native speakers, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

>Just translate the first paragraph. Of course, you can translate the whole article if you want.

>Knowing English could be very helpful in your travels. In most large cities in many countries, many ordinary people speak at least a little English. It is not unusual for travelers to speak English to each other, because that is the language they have in common. If you travel in Asia, many people speak Mandarin Chinese, right?

I saw the news that the shutdown is already over.

Everything will be alright.

>Yes, the government shutdown is over, federal workers are back to work and will get paid and the debt ceiling has been reset for the next two months. Many people are still feeling the economic pinch from that foolishness.

Sincerely

Fatty

We heard about Typhoon Wipha here in the US. I hope you did not sustain any direct damage from the storm. I am very sorry for all the damage and loss of life the storm caused. Was there heavy rain at the University?

If you ever come to the US, please let me know. You have an invitation to stay at my house if you come to the mid-Atlantic area.
