Lesson 16
Dear Yuki,
Thank you for your sixteenth message. My comments and corrections follow.
Sincerely,
Prof Sue Garreis
Prof.
Susan Garreis,
Hello.
Thank
you for your reply and corrections of my English.
I
will answer your questions.
Do
you like animals?
>I like animals very much.
>There are several deer that walk through my yard every day.
>I love to watch them.
>I must be very quiet, or they will run away.
¨I like animals, too.
I
have watched a deer only once.
I
am envious that a deer is seen in your garden!
It is probably cheaper if you visit the West Coast. In California I recommend San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. They are far apart, so you may only be able to visit one of the cities. In Washington state, Seattle is a beautiful town, I have heard. The flowers there are lovely! Of course, I recommend Washington DC, because it has wonderful museums and it is near me. It may be better to travel with a group, and the tour guides will know some very good towns and places to visit. There are many, many wonderful places to visit in the US. I hope someday you can come here.
¨I am really looking forward to
that.
I
want to take a photo to go to various places in the United States because I
like to take a photo.
My
older sister made a dish for me recently.
The
meals she cooks are delicious.
I
can make only fried egg. However, the appearance is good, but the taste is bad.
>Oops! Keep practicing, and you will make a good fried egg. It took me a long time to learn how to cook decent food.
¨Cooking wants to become able to
make it before I marry.
I
want to be able to cook before I marry.
How
did you learn to cook?
>I practiced a lot and made many bad dishes! I found a simple cookbook and made many recipes. I learned what I liked and I learned how to cook simple dishes.
Do
you like to cook?
I used to cook when I had children at home. I do not like to cook for just one person. So I make very simple meals now. I don't like leftovers either! Too often I forget to eat them, and they spoil. I have an excellent recipe for spaghetti sauce, though. I make that in the winter.
¨Spaghetti is one of my favorite
foods. I like the spaghetti sauce which mushroom in white sauce in particular.
What kind of spaghetti source do you make?
If
you don't mind, please tell me the recipe.
>Your spaghetti sauce sounds delicious!
My spaghetti sauce recipe is very simple:
olive oil
1/4 cup (4 ounces) (118 milliliters) minced garlic
1 pound (2.2 kilos) ground bison meat (or ground beef)
1 jar (24 ounces) (680 grams) tomato & basil spaghetti sauce
1 Tablespoon (1metric Tablespoon) oregano leaves
1/2 Tablespoon (1/2 metric Tablespoon) fennel seeds
1. Put a small amount of olive oil in a large heavy skillet. Swirl the olive oil to cover the bottom of the skillet.
2. Saute the minced garlic over medium heat. Remove the garlic from the pan. Keep the remaining oil in the pan.
3. Brown the meat in very little olive oil. (Bison is very lean meat. You may need a little more oil to keep it from sticking to the pan too much.)
4. Add the garlic, oregano, fennel and the jar of spaghetti sauce to the meat.
5. Cook on medium heat about 20 minutes, stirring frequently. Do not allow the liquid to completely evaporate. Add a little water if necessary.
This makes a lot of spaghetti sauce, especially if you are cooking for one person. I put one cup in a small container. I use as many containers as I need. I freeze them. One cup is a nice serving for me.
My aunt, Sister Annina, is eighty-eight years old. She taught school for a few years. She became a nurse working in a few hospitals, became a teacher of nurses and later director of nursing. She spent ten years in Taiwan. She left for Taiwan when she was sixty years old! She learned Chinese, too.
She is now in Maryland about two hours away from my house. I am fortunate to see her every few months.
Older Catholic nuns do not sit in their rocking chairs and think of days gone by. They all keep working until they are confined to bed because of illness. So my aunt works with the very old nuns who are in the hospital.
The celebration of the anniversaries was a marvelous experience. There were twenty nuns celebrating their anniversaries. They ranged from fifty to eighty years of service. Very many family members came for my aunt. There were thirty-four of us. It was a great time for all.
¨Your aunt, Sister Annina, is very
long-lived.
>Yes, she is. We are a lucky family!
Surely
they would be glad, too.
This
is the last email I will send.
The
email with you was very fun.
I
feel like we have talked often about food.
>Yes, we have!
Thank
you very much for half a year.
Let's
meet again sometime and somewhere!
Yuki
