Lesson 11

Dear Yuki,

Thank you for your eleventh message. My comments and corrections follow.

Prof. Susan Garreis,

Hello.

Thank you for your reply and corrections of my English.

I will answer your questions.

Please see the attached file called "summer vacation."

That file tells you what I did this summer.

I write this message from North Carolina.

My sister and I visit her two granddaughters.

The girls are six and three. They are fun!

I looked at the summer vacation file.

 It was very substantial summer.

>It was indeed! I always enjoy the summer.

I am so glad you found a job for the summer.

In the US, it is hard for college students to find summer jobs.

How is that?

>Our economy took a serious downturn in 2008.

>We are still recovering.

>Many jobs were lost.

>Not everyone who wants a job has one.

>So older people will work at a job that college students would usually have.

>College students work at jobs that high school students usually have.

>It is not true in every place in the US. It is true in many places, though.

The Izakaya evening sounded like fun.

Your trip reminded me of a wonderful bar in Kyoto where some friends and I ate a long time ago.

What kind of place was the bar?

>I don't remember the name of the bar anymore.

>It was a small bar on the second floor of a narrow building somewhere in Kyoto.

>We four were the only Americans in the bar.

>We ended the evening singing the American National Anthem at the request of one of the patrons.

>We had a wonderful time.

Did you sit in a tatami mat room? Did you sit at a table with chairs? Or did you sit at the bar with high bar stools?

I sat in a tatami mat room.

I feel calmer when in the tatami mat room.

>I agree. The tatami mat room is very peaceful.

I have never eaten basashi.

I ate vegetable sushi. I like that.

What other food did you like at the Izakaya?

I like Motsunabe (giblets cooked in a hot pot) and grilled chicken on a skewer.

There are some pictures here. I'm sorry the page of Japanese

http://r.gnavi.co.jp/b015401/

>Great pictures! Thank you. They made me hungry!

What kind of alcohol do you like?

I like red wine. I love the taste.

I have never drank red wine, but I often used in cooking.

Can you drink a lot of alcohol?

>No, I cannot drink a lot of alcohol. I usually don't drink any.

>Perhaps once or twice a year I will have some wine for a special occasion.

American students would look here for some iPhone apps.

http://blog.laptopmag.com/10-best-iphone-apps-youre-not-using

I am not sure if all or any of these apps work in Japan.

Good luck with the apps.

There are eight hundred thousand (800,000) apps for the iPhone5!

Enjoy your new phone!

→Thank you very much!

It was very helpful a lot of information to the iPhone is written there.

-----------------------------------------------

Autumn deepened, it became quite chilly in Japan.

How is it there?

>It is cooler in the US, too. It is not chilly yet. It is pleasantly cool.

I love this weather!

I went to Starbucks because new product was just released the other day.

It is the product called Roasted Almonds Frappuccino.

Starbucks web page (Japanese page):

http://www.starbucks.co.jp/products/?nid=tbn_01_pc

It was a drink like dessert. Because I loved sweets, I felt very happy.

Starbucks is one of my favorite cafe.

Do you have a favorite cafe?

>I love Starbucks hot green tea.

However at this time of year, this is a very popular drink:

http://www.starbucks.com/menu/drinks/espresso/pumpkin-spice-latte

>Pumpkin spice latte is delicious!

My favorite local café is the Donut Shack.

They are on Facebook, but do not have a regular website.

The owners make their own donuts every night.

Yummy! Best donuts I have ever eaten.

Sincerely yours,

Yuki
