Lesson 10

Dear Yuki,

Thank you for your tenth message. Welcome back from summer vacation! My comments and corrections follow.

Sincerely,

Prof. Sue Garreis

Prof. Susan Garreis,

Long time no see. Have you been well?

>I have been very well, thank you. I hope you are very well also.

What did you do over this summer?

>Please see the attached file called "summervacation."

>That file tells you what I did this summer.

>I write this message from North Carolina.

>My sister and I visit her two granddaughters.

>The girls are six and three. They are fun!

I was very busy during this summer vacation.

I work part-time in a supermarket close by.

I went for a part-time job for five or six days a week during the summer vacation.

Because there were many customers in the summer vacation, it was very tough.

The school holiday was very happy since I did my best at work.

>I am so glad you found a job for the summer.

>In the US, it is hard for college students to find summer jobs.

I went to an IZAKAYA (Japanese-style bar) with my friend.

I ate BASASHI for the first time there.

BASASHI is sliced raw meat.

It had a beef taste. It was delicious.

Have you eaten BASASHI?

>The Izakaya evening sounded like fun.

>Your trip reminded me of a wonderful bar in Kyoto where some friends and I ate a long time ago.

>Did you sit in a tatami mat room? Did you sit at a table with chairs? Or did you sit at the bar with high bar stools?

>I have never eaten basashi.

>I ate vegetable sushi. I like that.

>What other food did you like at the Izakaya

I drank a cocktail in there. It was a refreshing taste of orange

What kind of alcohol do you like?

>I like red wine. I love the taste.

I changed a cell-phone into iphone5 in early August.

I am not used to handling it. I sent an email by mistake.

>Wow! That is a very nice phone.

>I use a very simple phone.

If there is a recommended application for the iPhone, please tell me.

>American students would look here for some iPhone apps.

>I am not sure if all or any of these apps work in Japan.

>Good luck with the apps.

>There are eight hundred thousand (800,000) apps for the iPhone5!

>Enjoy your new phone!

Sincerely yours,

Yuki

The first file is "Welcome Back."

It is a very brief review of the first part of the course.

It is also a look forward to next week's lesson.

The second file is "summervacation."

It tells you what I did this summer.

As I write this, my grand niece, Catherine, helps me type the words.

She is almost six years old.

She is in kindergarten.

Kindergarten is the first year of American schools.

She is learning how to use the computer.

She says, "Hi!"
