Lesson 16

Dear Prof. Sue Garreis

Thank you for your 15th message. This message is my last message in this class. Thank you very much for teaching all this time! Thanks to you, I got wonderful opportunity to learn English and Accounting. My reply is in Arial. My homework is the end.

Dear Mei,

Thank you for the last message of this course. My comments are preceded with a ">>". Corrections are in italics.

Sincerely,

Prof. Sue Stiner

>Unfortunately, the shuttle launch is postponed for a long time. It will not launch before November 30. There were several leaks, and they can be life-threatening. It is a good thing that theyNASA will take the time to find and fix the troubles. I didn't realize until this trip how often the launches are delayed. The local people said the delays are not unusual. I believe it is better to live in the area in order to see a launch.

> However, the trip was a good one anyway. We saw the Kennedy Space Center for two days. It is a wonderful museum and tribute to space travel. It had been at least ten years since I saw it. There were many changes, so it was like a brand-new museum to me. We heard a former astronaut speak about his experiences. We bought several souvenirs. The weather was absolutely great except for Thursday. The rain that day kept the big crowds away from the museum, so that was fine, too. Rebecca, my oldest granddaughter, got some valuable long-distance driving experience. She mostly drives short trips of thirty minutes or so. It is good that she had practice driving for two, three or four hours at a time. She is a good driver.

Did you meet a former astronaut?

How envy!

How envious I am!

As I'm interested in earth science, I also want to go there someday.

>>Do you want to go to the Kennedy Space Center or to the International Space Station someday? I hope you can go to both places!

>>I was in the audience when former astronaut James Reilly spoke of one of his missions. Here is his NASA biography: http://www.jsc.nasa.gov/Bios/htmlbios/reilly.html. He was an engaging speaker. He is retired from NASA and is once again a scientist in the private sector.

>We celebrated two birthdays. Granddaughter Megan was fourteen on Nov. 4. My sister Carol was sixty-one on Nov 5. We got Megan an ice-cream cake and ate it in the motel room. We sang Happy Birthday to her, too. Meg's sister Emily showed her how to make a Facebook page. Meg spent the day as she chose--on the computer! All of us went to dinner at a Chinese restaurant.  My sister's birthday was Friday, Nov 5 and the day we decided to return home. We sang her Happy Birthday. At our age, that is plenty of celebration.

>My favorite part of the trip was the day we spent at my neighbor's vacation home. Neither of us knew ahead of time that the other was going to Florida for the launch. When we realize that we would be in the same place, my neighbor invited all of us to his place to see the launch. He is about ten miles away from the launch pad. We went there on Tuesday and spent the afternoon by the sea. It was so great! We planned to come back for the launch, but that was not to happen.
That too bad. I suppose that it is not easy to launch, as to launch brings with all its attendant risk.

>It would be delightful if you are able to continue our correspondence after the course is done. And if you are ever in America, please let me know. It would be fantastic if we could meet in person.

Of course, I want to continue. Please give your mail when you have time.

I will know you without fail when I go to America.

>>When you have time, feel free to email me. I will be glad to respond.

>The weather turned colder when we were in Florida. It was interesting driving back north on Sunday. Every time we got out of the car it was colder! It is definitely fall in Maryland now. Please take care of yourself, too. The quick change of temperature seems to make it easy to catch a cold.

My grandson, Sean, and his sister are at my house for two days. Sean loves a TV show called Ninja Warrior. Sean was all excited to show me this clip on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oco3lPfokaU. Have you heard of him? I was completely and totally amazed at his physical strength!

I know a TV show called Ninja Warrior. I sometime watch it. I wonder how your grandchildren know the TV show. In Japan, the TV show is called "Sasuke". Most of the casts are not entertainers. So I don't know him(Makoto Nagano). I have butterflies in my stomach whenever I watch the TV show. But I want to challenge to it, though I may fall overboard soon.

>>Sasuke has made it to the US, and apparently many people watch the show. The people do amazing things! I would fall in the water at my first step!

Homework

1. The accounting was somewhat easy. The English was somewhat easy. Getting to and using the linked web pages was

     very easy.

2. Yes.

The Course Evaluation.

    1. Why did you take this course? (You may give more than one reason.)

I was introduced thie course to Prof. Shiina. In fact, this class is my part-time job. But I wanted to learn English, so I asked

him to participated in the class.

    2. What made your learning easier in this course?

It was about right for me to read your email. I hardly used my dictionary when I read.

    3. What made your learning harder in this course?

It was difficult for me to understand nuance of English.

4.Can you think of anything to make this course better?

As for me, there is absolutely nothing bad about this course. It is very easy to understand your homepage.

    5. What was the hardest part of the course? Why?

It was so difficult to explain accounting in English because I'm not good at writting English.

    6. What was the easiest part of the course? Why?

It was easy to read your homepage.

    7. What could you do for yourself to make this course better?

First of all, I think I was used to use English. I frequently would not have used as this if I I had not participated in this

        course.

    8. What could the American professor do to make this course better?

It is better for you to convey about American cultural tradition. I think it is good to understand other cultural, in

particular, because Japan is an island country.

    9. How easy (or hard) was it to get to the weekly lesson on the web?

        It was easy to read.

   10. How helpful was the weekly lesson web site?

It had lead to help reading accounting in English.

11.What problems did you have in getting to the web sites?
         I have absolutely no complaints.

12.Each lesson had several links to other web sites, such as Applied Materials.  How helpful were the web sites given in

        each lesson?

As I cannot search some web sites such as Applied Materials, it was helpful for me.

13.Did you learn anything new from the holiday (i.e., July 4, Halloween, Thanksgiving) web sites?

I had pumpkin on my mind all the time, whenever I hear someone mention "halloween".  But I knew that it had meaning.

14.Was the English used in these lessons too hard?

     a.  Did you go to Prof. Garreis's Facebook pages?

          No, I didn't. Though I registered at Facebook, I don't use yet.

     b.  Was her Facebook site useful to you in any way? If yes, how?

     c.  If no, how could Prof. Garreis make it useful to you?

It will be useful to learn English, or to understand American culture.

Have a great weekend!!!

Sincerely,

Mei
