My fifth message

Dear Dr. M. Susan Stiner

Thank you for your message and English correction.

I looked at the webpage about tornadoes.

In Japan, there are very few tornadoes.

I have watched a tornado only on TV.

They have a great deal of power, and destroy everything.

I was seized with fear to watch a lot of towns and villages being

destroyed by the tornado.

A tornado that passed near Pennsylvania was an F2, wasn't it?

This damage is hard to take, but there are bigger tornadoes.

I can't imagine the power of an F6.

There is strange weather in Japan, too.

Probably, strange phenomena will often occur this summer.

The phenomenon is the sudden increase in temperature.

I'm afraid the strange weather will have bad consequences for us.

Sincerely yours,

Kayo.@

Teacher's Fifth message

Dear Kayo,

@Thank you so much for your fifth message sent on > Date: 12 Jun 98

I am in West Virginia this weekend. West Virginia is a nine-hour drive

away from my home in Delaware. My parents live in West Virginia (WV).

@

My sister and I drove here to visit my parents. Last summer my mother

was very sick. My sister and I came to see that my parents were ok.

They are!

@

On the way to my parents' town (Huntington), my sister, Carol, and I

stopped in the town where we grew up (Clarksburg WV). We saw the houses

where we lived, the schools we attended and the main street of the

town. We tried to remember what stores were on the street when we lived

there. Many of the stores are gone. Some of the buildings are torn

down. We took very many pictures. We had the pictures developed in an

hour in Huntington. They we spent several hours showing our parents the

pictures and remembering the old places. It was fun!

The mountains are beautiful here. This state has great hunting and

fishing. Some very good winter ski resorts are in WV, too. There are

some great hand-made craft stores here, too.

My sixth message@

Dear Dr. M. Susan Stiner,

Thank you for your message and English correction.

I looked at the webpages, and looked up the Huntington and Clarksburg on a map.

West Virginia is surrounded by the mountains, it is good place!

I have gone skiing before, but I am so good at skiing.

I want to go skiing in foreign mountains.

My hometown, Hitachinaka, is near the Pacific Ocean.

Because Hitachinaka is near the sea, it is cool in the summer.

The sea is a ten-minute walk away from our house.

We can go to the sea anytime we want.

We enjoy swimming and fishing in the sea every summer.

And Hitachinaka is a flourishing fishery town.

We can always eat fresh fish.

The town changed a lot when I came back last spring vacation.

Old buildings are town down and new ones are rebuilt on the spot.

It is very scary that the town is changing.

Sincerely yours, kayo.@

Today (Sunday) is Father's Day in the U.S. You can learn more about

My seventh message @

Dear Dr. M. Susan Stiner,

Thank you for your message and Englishi <<English>> correction.

@

The third Sunday in June is also Father's Day in Japan.

Each person gives a present to his father as a token of our gratitude.

So far I gave flowers, neckties, handkerchiefs and flowers to my father.

This year I gave him a shirt.

My father was glad to accept my gift.

Before Father's Day, department stores have sales.

When I went shopping at a department store, many people were there.

The second Sunday in May is Mother's Day in Japan.

Then we present red carnations to each of our mother.

Each child presents red carnations to his mother.

This year I gave her red carnations and a scarf.

Is there Mother's Day in the US?

Sincerely yurs, Kayo@

@

Teacher's seventh message @

There certainly is! We also celebrate it on the second Sunday in May.

Here is a site about Mother's Day:

http://www.holidays.net/mother/story.htm

It has pretty flowers and music, too. The English may be hard. Read

the page, if you want. You don't have to.

@

Flowers of any type is a very popular gift for Mother's Day. So is

candy. For Mother's Day, the three children living at home took me (and

their dad) to dinner at a local restaurant. We had a very good time.

We laughed very hard at the stories they told us about things they did

when we were younger. It is a good thing we didn't know about those

things at the time. It would not have been funny then!

Sincerely,

My eighth message@

Dear Dr. M. Susan Stiner,

Thank you for your message and English correction.

@

It is very warm lately in Japan.

As come near the summer, it is getting hotter day after day.

In tokyo, the maximum temperature rose to more 30Ž every day in midsummer.

I am used to the heat, but not if the air conditioner works too well in

the room.

The school began its summer vacation two weeks later.

I went camping in the mountain last summer.

This summer, I still don't make up plan.

I want to travel somewhere this summer vacation.

I want to made plan for the trip with my friends.

I wish go on with our plan.

When does summer vacation start for U.S. universities?

What do university students in the U.S. do for summer vacation?

Sincerely yours, Koyo.

@Dear Kayo,

@Thank you for your eighth message. This is the first of two messages

from me. Both messages are my reply to your eighth message.

@

Summer vacation started in the middle or end of May. It depends on

whether school started in August or September.

@

The same things you do: go home, travel, visit friends, work. Many have

summer jobs.

>

Kayo, I hope you enjoy your vacation this summer. See you in October!

In your first message in October, please tell what you did in the

summer.
