This summer vacation I spent at my home.

My hometown, Hitachinaka, is near the Pacific Ocean.

The sea is a ten-minute walk away from my house.

It is so warm this summer.

I couldn't go swimming.

I went camping in the mountains this summer, too.

It was a very beautiful place.

The place had clean air and there was a lake near the camp ground.

We enjoyed fishing and barbecue.

　Welcome back from your summer break! It sounds as if you used your time

well. My comments follow.

How beautiful the view must be! Can you hear the ocean from your

house? I love the sound of the ocean. Unfortunately, I am two hours

away from the Atlantic ocean.

I went camping once this year. One weekend in September my daughter and

I camped for a weekend at a Girl Scout camp. Every year at that time

there is a camp weekend to prepare the leaders and older scouts for the

new scouting year. We had a great time! Our camp site was near the

mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. We had great views in the morning and

evening. It was refreshing.

It is time to resume our talks about accounting, American style. Before

break, we talked about two of the most important financial statements.

These are the balance sheet and the income statement.

The balance sheet shows the company's financial picture on the last day

of the reporting period. The income statement shows the company's

profit, or loss, for the entire reporting period.

Both the income statement and the balance sheet use the accrual method

of accounting. Under the accrual method, income and expenses are

recognized, regardless of whether cash is received or paid.

Cash is such an important asset to a company that American accounting

information users want to know all about it. We have a formal financial

statement, the Statement of Cash Flows, that tells us much about the

cash received and spent by the company. Next week, we will talk about

that statement.

I am surprised that the water was cold. The summer here was hot and

dry. I think the water was very warm on the Atlantic coast. I did not

go in the water, however. I stayed in the air-conditioning!

West Virginia is very beautiful. Many tourists like to go there in the

summer to fish, in the fall to hunt and in the winter to ski. I like to

go there to visit my family.

The school festival of Chuogakuin University is near at hand.

Do you know about the school festival?

In Japan, high school and university students have special days when

they invite their families and friends onto the campus.

My university's festival is October 31, November first and second.

We sell refreshments and hold concerts.

The school festival is pleasant.

To my disappointment, my family will not come.

But my friends and I will participate.
