Lesson 8
Dear Fatty,
Thank you for your eighth message. My comments
and corrections follow.
Sincerely,
Dear
Professor Susan Garreis,
Now I do not get much exercise, but I have a plan
to lose weight.
>Good for you! It is hard to make those plans.
I hope you stick with your plan.
>It is a lifestyle change, not a temporary
change. Good for you!
Starting last week, my friend and I went to the
fitness center.
>Excellent!
>It is very smart to go with a friend. People
who exercise with friends stay with their program longer than people who
exercise by themselves.
And we will go there to build muscle starting
next week.
>Excellent!
>Muscle weighs more than fat. Please do not be
discouraged if you do not lose the kilograms you thought at first.
>If you lose centimeters (e.g., your waist
become smaller) and are stronger, that is progress.
>In the US we measure weight in pounds. Height
is measured in feet and inches. Body dimensions are measured in inches.
I canft endure the fat and I must slim.
>Good luck with your program! You will be more
healthy and will live longer.
In Japan
it is the rainy season. The rain
is prolonged but not hard.
>We do not have a real rainy season in my part
of the US.
>We have been lucky so far this year. We have
had rain about once a week in June and July so far.
>That is great for gardens and yards.
>July and August are often very dry months.
>We will see what the future brings.
I can
relax at home, if I go to a strange place, generally speaking, I will lose
sleep.
I like the beach and places where it is quiet.
>I love the beach, but more in the winter than
the summer.
>I prefer less crowded places, too.
But in fact, I like go to anywhere provided my
friends go with me.
Last Thursday was the Fourth of July. It is a
very important holiday in the US.
It is our Independence Day. We celebrate the
founding of our country on that day.
We celebrate with a holiday from work and summer
school.
We celebrate with fireworks. Here is a YouTube
video of the fireworks in New York City: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jANE7HoDYV0.
Every major city has a fireworks display. Most
small towns have them too.
Many families set off fireworks in the streets in
fronts of their homes.
