Lesson 13

Dear Yuki,

Thank you for your thirteenth message. My comments and corrections follow.

Sincerely,

Prof. Sue Garreis

Prof. Susan Garreis,

Hello.

Thank you for your reply and corrections of my English.

I will answer your questions.

I love pumpkin muffins and pumpkin cookies. I love a spice cake made with cooked, mashed pumpkin. I love pumpkin flavored tea.

I love too.

Will you make the cakes and cookies?

>No, I do not bake any more. The recipes make too much for one person to eat. I buy the baked goods at a bakery or the grocery store. My daughter bakes >the spice cake. It is extra delicious!

We do a lot in the US for Halloween. Already the candy is in the stores. There are costumes for sale everywhere.

My witches hat is out. This year I will decorate it with fall leaves and pretty ribbon. I don't dress in costume any more.

I love to be at my house and pass out candy to the neighbors' kids. Fewer and fewer little kids go from house to house, though.

The children will probably be happy about that too.

Mostly the little kids go to organized parties at a friend's house or a shopping mall.

When I was a kid and when my kids were kids, we dressed up in costumes that we made.

Farmers, ghosts, witches, princesses and robots were popular choices. They were easy costumes to make

Kids went to every house in the neighborhood with a porch light on. Most houses were lit. Everybody gave out candy.

Halloween in the U.S. seems to be very fun.

Halloween is not such a big celebration in Japan.

>Halloween is a great deal of fun in the US. The kids are happy when they get lots of candy. It doesn't matter whether they go house to house or go to one

>party. Halloween is somewhat less fun for adults without kids, since fewer kids go house to house.

It was great to sift through the candy when we got home. I was never very good at saving candy to eat later. I still am not!

Me too.

I immediately ate all the candy that I got.

This year I plan to sit outside with lots of small pretzel bags.>>I will hand them to each child who comes my way.

I also want to go there to get a pretzel.

>Come on over! I will have lots of pretzels for you!

It is an excellent way of relieving stress. I loved badminton in college.

It was very funny one day when I played badminton at school.

The shuttlecock lodged in the ceiling when I returned it powerfully.

>In this context "returned" means "hit the shuttlecock with the racket after it was served to me."

And then my pants ripped when I picked up the shuttlecock after it fell to the ground.

I have the pants even now.

Did you join the badminton club in college?

>No, the college did not have a badminton club then.

>Badminton was part of a gym (physical education) class.

>The college did not have any sports teams then. Now it has several.

Right now the US is in a very interesting position.

Never in my lifetime have the legislative and executive branches of the government been so opposed to each other.

Most ordinary citizens are disgusted with their elected officials.

Since the government is partly shut down, many people are not getting paid.

Those people and their families will suffer a very real economic hardship because of lost wages.

There is serious talk that the US will not be able to extend its debt ceiling.

The US might actually default on the bonds that are held worldwide.

I cannot imagine the short and long term global effects of a default.

I sincerely hope that every member of Congress who currently holds office will not be re-elected in the next elections.

I am embarrassed for my country.

What do people in Japan say about the predicament the US is in?

As if it were me.

The situation in Japan is also similar.

There are many people suffering from cruel behavior of the government.

I hope that many people will be saved from the predicament, even if it is only a few.

>So do I.

Sincerely yours,

Yuki

---------------

This week's lesson is attached.

It is about various types of technology that bring us financial information.

The technology brings other information, too.

On Saturday, I went to a local historical site with friends. It is called Historic London Town and Gardens.

Here is the link: http://www.historiclondontown.com/.

The town was started in 1683. That is three hundred thirty (330) years ago. That is very old for America. It is before we were a country.

There is an indoor museum and many old buildings outside. Some people dress up in costumes of the sixteen hundreds and tell us about daily life there.

We wanted to see the gardens, but we could not. It was raining too hard. I will go back someday. It was a very nice place.

Have you been to an old historical site in Japan? What was the name of the place? How old was the place?

In 1987 I went to Kyoto for a conference. We visited Shoren-in Temple. It is thousands of years old. I do not know the date it was first built. It was beautiful! So peaceful! I still can picture it in my mind.
