Lesson 13

Dear Professor Sue Garreis:

==> Dear Emily,

Thank you for your thirteenth message. My comments follow.

In China, we usually have family reunions on holidays like National Days, or
just on weekend. My family just had a reunion during National Days. They
went a tour together and had fun.

Last week, I went to a dinner with oversea students and professors in
Chuogakuinn University. The students are all from the same college in China.
We had a good time.

==>Are there many students from China at Chuogakuin?

Homework:

1.A.      Send me the URL and name of a Japanese firm that is an Internet
service provider, or sells routers, or sells software.

--
http://www.nttdata.com/index.html

  The name is: NTT DATA.

==>Thank you.

1.B.      Send me the URL and name of a Japanese CPA firm.

--
http://www.tkao.com/e/index.html

 The name is: Tokyo Kyodo Accounting Office.

==>Thank you.

2.         Name at least two ways that technology will affect your future.

-- I think the voice-activated system will be widely used in computers, phones, cars and so on.

And the computer will be easier for normal users.

==>I agree. Already in the US, many phone menus are able to use voice responses, in addition to keyed-in responses.

I would love it if my car could be voice-activated! I imagine more progress in voice activation has been made in Japan.

3.         A podcast is a form of audio broadcasting over the Internet.

Music, lessons, or commentary are sent to a large group of listeners.

Have you ever heard a podcast?

If yes, what was it about?

Do any of your professors use podcasts in their courses?

-- I have heard a podcast on the website of a college in Japan. It’s a
lesson about Japanese Accountings.

 I don’t know any of my professors use podcasts in their courses.

==>Thank you.

4.         What technology would you like to see used in your courses?

--I think the saving of electricity technology should be used in our
courses.

==>Right now, saving electricity must be very important in Japan. I was surprised that the university shortened classes by one week before the break. What are your ideas for saving electricity? Perhaps online courses could save electricity in the short run. It would save the electricity used to light a classroom. However, it takes a long time to prepare an online course. If the course is not already online, it is not something the professor can do in a week or two.

5.         How easy was this lesson for you?

              The accounting was: About right.

  The English was: About right.

  Getting to and using the linked web pages was: About right.

Sincerely,

Emily

************

Emily, let me clarify the emails you received this week from me.

There were three. The first one had a file called "sayonara." That file is actually the last lesson. Just ignore it for this week. Or you can check out the music links. It should be easy for you to translate. By the way, do I have the correct characters for the Chinese version of good bye? I used a translator to get the characters. The second message had a file called "evaluate." It is one of two files for this week's lesson. It is customary for students in the US to evaluate their classes at the end. the students are expected to give honest answers to the questions. The third email (this one) has a file that summarizes what we did this year.
