Lesson 1

Dear Professor Garreis,

=> Dear Emi,

Thank you for your first message. My comments follow below.

 My name is Jiao Liu. My English name is Emily. You can just call me Emi for
short.

=>Wonderful! One of my granddaughters (the second oldest one) is Emily also. We call her Emi for short.

I graduated from Dalian university of foreign languages. My major in
college is Japanese (International trade).I have passed the exams of Japanese
Level 1 and English Level 6
@(both the top level in China).

=>Impressive!

With an ability to speak Japanese and English, I had the opportunity to study in Japan for a Master's degree.

=>Your command of written English is very good.

But in the field of accounting, I'm still a learner in the first stage.

Ifm glad to have this chance to join in the international class as a teaching assistant.

=>I'm delighted to have you along for the journey.

I hope we will have a nice time together this year.

Sincerely,

Emily

------------

The two new lessons for this week are attached in this email. They are Word 2011 documents. Usually the lessons will be referenced by a link to a website I use for this course. However, I am not as facile as I would like with the web site. As a result I was not able to send the files up in time for this week's message. They will be working for next week. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Please let me know if you or Ichi ever have any problem with the web site. Feel free to ask me any questions you want about the course content or the links. I am happy to talk at length about most anything!

This week the email is coming from the basement guest room of a very good friend of mine. She loves to garden, as I do. We spent the day examining every flower and tree and shrub in her extensive gardens. This evening (Saturday) we dug up quite a few of her extras. The plants will find a home in my garden on Monday. We spent a considerable amount of time sitting by the water lapping at her back yard. Delightful!

Because your command of English is very good, I will write longer messages to you than to Ichi. Is there some particular aspect of written English you wish to improve? You mentioned that you are a teaching assistant. What is your role in the class? You also mentioned that you are working on your master's. Did you just start the program? When will you graduate? Will you go back to China when you are done in Japan? How many other languages do you speak?

Sincerely yours,

Emily
