Lesson 3

Dear Prof. Sue Garreis

Thank you for your reply. My replies are in orange. Homework is written in black at the end.

Well, I owe you a big apology. I did not get on email this week until late this
weekend. It is nearly midnight Sunday here in Maryland. I know it is about lunchtime in Chiba. So sorry! I'll try harder next week to check email more often.

You shouldn't apologize. Any time will do.
In the US, people try to commit fraud with the social welfare systems. Sometimes they succeed, but most of the time they don't. In my daughter's line of work, there is not much room for fraud. In her job, the state of Delaware (where she lives) decides whether it will take over the care and well-being of children that perhaps are being abused in some way. Sometimes the situation isnot one of abuse. Sometimes it is an angry or vindictive neighbor who made the call about the children. Other times the children are really at risk. Kate's job is a very hard one, in my opinion. She does it very well. I could not do her job, I know that.

There are serious issues affect social work, aren't there?

ËIt is beyond my imagination. Probably, I also can not do her job. I should follow her.
ËDon't worry! I will tell you if the phrasing is not what it should be. I think that American written and spoken speech has many fewer formal ways of saying things than Japanese.

I got it.

ËIt never occurred to me that the red and white label chicken noodle soup would be only sold in America. See how provincial I am! Unfortunately, I am a typical American in that regard. Ginger tea sounds good! I imagine that it was very likely the lack of sleep that made you more susceptible to a cold. That's a risk that all students take. And it is even worse for graduate students!

When I go to America shortly, I will buy them. I should be more careful about health. Recently, I usually exercise. Do you know BILLY's BOOTCAMP? In the US and Japan, It once was in fashion. It works my body with watching DVD. Now, I have muscular pain.

ËOh, my heavens! I have heard the name, Billy's Bootcamp, so I googled it. Here's a YouTube clip of an exercise session: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-e-ya6c7YQs. No wonder you are sore! I did not realize he is the guy who invented Tae Bo. Good for you for exercising that much. You will be in very good shape! I know you won't give up! And that will make all the difference for you. Your written English is pretty good. I don't have to make many corrections. Good for you

Thank you! Thank you for correcting every time.

ËOh, my goodness! The temperature just shot up overnight. It was very humid today. Right now (10:45 pm), the temperature is still 85 degrees Fahrenheit (about 29 degrees Celsius). At the beginning of the week, the temperature was delightful 70 degrees F (about 21 degrees C). And the humidity was very low. That is what makes it hard for me--the humidity. I was drenched in sweat at the end of the week after just an hour in the garden and I was working the shade!! I am glad to hear you have some relatively cool weather. I know it can get very hot in your part of Japan.

Thank you for writing in Celsius. I feel to be a cold when the temperature is less than 68 deg F. Last week, the temperature sank about 68 deg F in my pert. But it is Just the same temperature as your area, now. Today' the highest temperature (17th) is about 82 deg F in Chiba. I live in Ibaraki. Ibaraki lies on Ciba. Though my part is far northerly from my school, the temperature is just the same in summer.

ËThis past week was a busy one for me. On Monday I was in Delaware to drive my oldest granddaughter to the doctor for a follow-up visit. She has a joint condition that makes it easy for her to dislocate her shoulder or hip. Her hip has given her a lot of trouble for the last couple of months. She must get exercise to strengthen her muscles. That way they can keep the bones in place better. We'll see what the summer brings for her. That too but. How has your oldest granddaughter been? You have many event every day. Oh! Laurence Fishburne! I know him. He appeard on THE MATRIX. In the US, I suppose the actors and actress often state. So sorry. I have no time this week. So, this time is short messages.

ËNo need to apologize for short messages. I know that your time is scarce. Yes, Laurence Fishburne was in The Matrix. I watch him on TV in the series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. My granddaughter, Bec, is much better! Thank you for asking. She is at Girl Scout Camp this summer as a counselor. She used to go to the camp as a Scout several years ago. After only three days of walking the camp, she was able to put away her crutches. Her muscles got stronger fast so she can walk unaided now. Great! She will be there until mid-August. Her leg and core muscles will be in good shape by the end of the summer. In a funny turn of events, her boyfriend ended up working there also. He will join the Army in September. The physical exercise will be good for him, too. He will be the person in charge of the boating events at the camp. There are a few pictures of the camp here.http://www.cbgsc.org/08_common/camp/grove_point/grove_point.html. My daughter Kate was very active in Girl Scouts. She went to the camp many times, and I was there several times with Kate. It was fun to go there last week for Bec.Bec needed to get some extra supplies, so I picked her up at camp. I won't miss the mosquitoes at that camp though!

Homework

1. The balance sheet shows business's financial position. The financial statement  is called the "balance sheet" because the value of assets and the sum of liabilities  and stockholders' equity must balance (be equal).

ËCorrect.

2. The U.S. does not have legal reserves.

ËCorrect. However, the answer I was looking for was the definition of "stockholders' equity".  It is the owners' share of the assets. The creditors share of assets is called Liabilities.

3. Oracle's financial statement shows in words as marketable securities.

ËCorrect.

4. $43,026.

ËI am not sure what this number represents. I could not find it associated with any asset, liability, equity account or total on the Oracle balance sheet. Sorry. What I wanted was the value of the current asset you named in the answer to question 3. I wanted you to write the value in words, not numbers. The value of marketable securites for 2009 is three billion six hundred twenty-nine million US dollars (US$3,629,000,000). Sorry the question was not clear.

5. It's account payable.

ËCorrect.

6. $3,277.00.

ËThe value of Nike's total current liabilities in 2009 is three billion two hundred seventy-seven million US dollars. The value of Nike's accounts payable in 2009 is one billion thirty-one million nine hundred thousand US dollars. (US$1,031.90)

7. My answers are bellow.

Thank you for the vocabulary table.

Sincerely yours,

Mei

ËMei,

This week was not as busy as the week before. The weather was a little cooler and much less humid. I was in the garden several times in the morning. Now there are four tomato plants in the ground. I am anxiously awaiting the birth of some tomatoes. I love produce fresh from the garden. Tomatoes are the only vegetable I can grow, however. There are woods behind my house. Raccoons live there and the deer regularly walk through my yard on their way to the woods. My yard is their personal snack machine. The tomatoes are not raided because I plant them close to the house in the front. The deer don't come there. Thank heaven!

This reply is coming out to you early because I leave on Saturday morning for Delaware. My daughter and I will go to the house of a good friend to celebrate his sixtieth birthday. His daughter and my daughter are very good friends. He is a marvelous baker. I imagine there will be some really great desserts! On Sunday Kate and I will go to granddaughter #6's dance recital. Emma is five and is absolutely crazy about ballet. I have never been able to see her dance recital before. In the past, my schedule never permitted me to get to her recitals. This should be fun. By the time I return home on Sunday night, it will be too far into Monday morning in Japan.

The web site should be working now. So the next lesson is at: http://msgarreis.com/balance210.htm. Please let me know as soon as you can if there are any difficulties with the web site.

Enjoy your week!
