Dear Nao,

Thank you for your eleventh message.  My comments follow.

Sincerely,

Prof. Sue Garreis

Dear Prof G,

Thank you for your reply and corrections of my English.

I will answer your last question.

Homework

1.Last week you read about what I did over the summer break.

¨I read about what I did over the summer break.

How about Germany and Switzerland?

Germany and Switzerland were wonderful.  I only saw Lucerne in Switzerland.  I saw beautiful mountains.  We rode a train up seven thousand (7,000) feet (about 2134 meters).  What a view!  The two rivers in Germany were beautiful, with many, many

grapevines.

I want to go to around the world!

I hope you can.  Send me a postcard from everywhere you go.

2.Last week you told me everything that you did over the summer break.

¨I went to Fukuoka.

3.Find one web link that relates to something you did over the summer.

There were beautiful pictures on the web site.  Did you swim there?

4.How is your class different now that your professor is the President of the University?

¨My professor is very busy. But he looks slightly happy.

I'm waiting for your reply.

Sincerely. Nao

One of the class asked about American college summer vacation.  I will share my answer with all of you.

Typically students and teachers finish school in late May or early June.  School resumes in very late August or early

September.  The time between is the students' summer vacation.  Some teachers work during the summer at teaching or some

other job.  College professors often do research in the summer.  Young students play in the summer.  Older students work.

The parents of the students do not have that long time off in the summer.  It is a problem for parents of young children.  It is hard to find proper care for them.

American college is at different time of year from college in Japan.  American college students start their first (fall) semester in late August.  The fall semester ends right before Christmas.  Christmas is December 25.  The second (spring) semester starts

in mid-January for most colleges.  The spring semester is over by the end of May.

American college students have a little time off during the semesters.

In the fall semester there are:

1. Fall break in October.  In some schools it is one day.  In other schools it is a week!

2. Thanksgiving in November.  It is a Thursday.  The schools always are closed on the Friday after Thanksgiving.  Students have

at least 4 days off:  Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In the spring semester there are:

1.  Martin Luther King Day in January.  It is a one day break.

2.  Spring break is a week off in March or April.

3.  Some schools have a day or two off at Easter, usually in April.

Colleges always have summer school.  Not all students go to summer school. Some return to their families.  Some work.  Some

travel.

You read the Welcome Back page at:  http://www72.homepage.villanova.edu/susan.stiner/cgu/WelcomeBack06.htm.

The Welcome Back page reviews what we did in the first half of the course.

You answered all the questions on the Welcome Back page.  Thanks!

I changed the Lesson Schedule, which is here:  http://www72.homepage.villanova.edu/susan.stiner/cgu/cgulessons06.htm

I added a line before September 29, since everyone sent me an extra message.

This week's "new" lesson is the Welcome Back page.

Next week's new lesson is the Statement of Cash Flows.
